Fire Safety Procedures
Fire is a killer and, according to the most recent figures, the number of deaths caused by fire in commercial premises is on the increase. The UK’s fire legislation has been developed in stages with additions often being made in reaction to major incidents. The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order came into effect on the 1st October 2006 and replaces previous fire safety legislation. These new regulations place the responsibility for fire safety on the person who has control of the premises and could be the employer, managing agent, owner or occupier.
The order applies to virtually all premises and covers nearly every type of building, structure and open space.
For example, it applies to:
- Offices & Shops
- Factories & Warehouses
- Sleeping accommodation
- Health care premises
- Residential Care premises
- Educational premises
- Places of assembly
- Transport premises & facilities
- Theatres & cinemas
- Outdoor event locations
In order to comply with the regulations, it is important that your organisation has suitable policies and procedures in place. These procedures should reduce the risk of a fire occurring and reduce the potential of a fire spreading should an unfortunate event occur. Your company’s fire policy should also cover those with special needs such as the disabled, elderly etc as well as individuals with short term special needs i.e. pregnant workers. This is where Citation plc can come in, our team of advisers and consultants will, with your assistance, put your fire procedures into place which will help to ensure that your staff and premises are safe.
