Wondering whether your Health & Safety Consultant is adequately qualified or accredited
11th April 2011
Citation plc is delighted that the Government has launched the Occupational Safety and Health Consultants Register (OSHCR) which is now live.
Health & Safety consultants can join the register, but must be able to demonstrate that they;
• Belong to a professional body
• Have a degree-level qualification
• Have least two years' experience
• Can demonstrate a commitment to continuing their professional development
Should a business owner require the support of Citation plc to help them comply with their Health & Safety obligations, the OSHCR provides reassurance.
It enables those who require an outsourced compliance solution for Health & Safety to search for an individual Health & Safety consultant and view whether the consultant meets the required OSHCR standards.
Citation are delighted that our Health & Safety consultants are either working towards or have been accepted and can be found on the register.
Alastair Hall, Head of Health and Safety at Citation plc said “We are delighted that the OSHCR has been introduced, it provides complete transparency for all service providers and demonstrates the quality of Citation consultants. Citation has always prided itself on the quality of our staff and it’s comforting to get recognised by an independent body. This makes it easier for our clients to seek reassurance prior to purchasing our services”
Citation’s compliance solutions in health & safety and employment law provide SMEs with 24/7 advice and ongoing support to deal with any related issue, enabling employers to easily demonstrate they have followed the necessary procedures.

New regulations keep Citation on track for record revenues
10th April 2011
Citation, which advises firms on employment law and health and safety matters, is on track for record revenues and profits this year as it attracts about 100 new clients a month, bosses said today as published in the MEN on 27th June 2011
The Wilmslow-based business is forecasting turnover of £15m for 2011, up £1m on 2010.
Underlying pre-tax profits are expected to rise from £3.3m to £4.5m as Citation benefits from greater economies of scale.
Chief executive Lindsay Hill said Citation’s 210-strong workforce is likely to increase by around 20 during 2011 as demand for its services grows.
Citation, which was founded in 1995, employs 130 at its headquarters. The rest are consultants operating all over the country, advising SMEs on matters such as regulatory compliance, disciplinary and grievance issues and redundancy programmes.
Agency worker regulations and the scrapping of the default retirement age, which come into force later this year, are expected to further fuel demand for Citation’s services.
Clients include veterinary clinics, dentists, doctors, children’s nurseries, independent schools, care homes and funeral directors as well as trade associations, professional bodies and companies operating in sectors such as retail, manufacturing and construction.
Citation’s customers typically employ between six and 200 staff. It currently acts for 6,500 clients and competes against rivals such as Croner and Manchester-based Peninsula Business Services.
Mr Hill, a solicitor who worked as a lawyer in the City of London prior to joining Citation in 2001, said: “We are on track for a strong year as we take on more clients and win more business. The market is fairly brisk but we think we look after our clients well and are anticipating increased revenues and profits for 2011. We are pleased with the way things are going this year.”
Citation operates a 24-hour helpline which currently handles about 6,000 calls a month from clients.

North West Business Insider see 'Bonkers' regulation propelling Citation's growth
9th April 2011
A rise in red tape is set to propel Wilmslow-based Citation to double turnover and profits in the next two years.
North West Business Insider reported that employment law specialist, which made profits of £4m on turnover of £15m in the last financial year to December 2010, takes subscription income from businesses and meets all costs from employment tribunals if the business loses, who has followed Citation’s advice.
It also provides detailed consultancy advice to businesses on all aspects of employment law, implementing company handbooks, policies and systems.
One of the biggest concerns for business customers of Citation is the need for compliance with local authority pre-qualification schemes.
Chief executive Lindsay Hill said: "There are good schemes in place for a good reason, but some people in local authorities are asking their suppliers to jump through hoops that are inappropriate. It’s bonkers."
The business is privately owned and the largest shareholder is entrepreneur Paul Hogarth, owner of Perspective, a prolific acquirer of independent financial advisers.
Mr Hill added: "We are not for sale; we keep all of our options open because we don’t know what the future will bring. We have no plans for an IPO (initial public offering). We are keeping our options open."
He said he has appointed advisers to examine a future strategy.
"We get approaches from private equity and trade buyers as much as weekly. At the moment I say to everyone we’re not for sale."

Changes to Paternity Leave Come into Force
5th April 2011
The new rules which came into force on 3rd April 2011, may entitle qualifying employees to additional paternity leave. The right to take paternity leave is restricted to someone who has or expects to have responsibility for the upbringing of the child and is either the biological father of the child or is married to or is the partner (male or female) of the child’s mother.
A qualifying employee is entitled to choose to take either one week or two consecutive weeks of ordinary paternity leave.
As of 3rd April 2011, employees who qualify for ordinary paternity leave in respect of a baby due to be born on or after 3 April 2011, also qualify for a minimum of two weeks and a maximum of 26 weeks additional paternity leave. As with ordinary paternity leave, all the employee’s contractual terms and conditions are maintained throughout this period except the right to pay.
During the baby’s first year, parents will be able to share time off work. Once the child is 20 weeks but before they are one year old, qualifying employees can take additional paternity leave once the mother has returned to work.
Some employers are concerned about the changes to paternity leave and a recent poll undertaken by the British Chamber of Commerce showed over half of the employers questioned thought the changes would be detrimental to their business.
Andrea O’Hare, Head of Personnel and Employment Law at Citation plc said "The changes to Paternity leave have been carefully considered and employers should have nothing to fear about the changes. Our expert helpline advisors have been talking clients through the changes and providing support on how to deal with requests for paternity leave”
