Teachers strike causes a knock on effect for UK business.
21st June 2011
With the National Union of Teachers and the Association of Teachers and Lecturers planning to hold a national one day strike on June 30th 2011, both employers and employees need to begin preparations for childcare during the strike.
Employers should encourage employees to think ahead and to be proactive about looking at alternative childcare arrangements including asking relatives, friends or nurseries to care for children if schools close.
Andrea O’Hare, Head of Personnel & Employment Law, at Citation plc Employment Law specialists said “Employers could also consider allowing employees to take their holiday entitlement, look at the possibility of the employee working from home or agreeing time off that can be worked back at a later date”.
Ultimately, if none of the above applies, then employees have a legal right to take a reasonable amount of unpaid time off to cope with an emergency involving a dependant.

Another Bank Holiday in 2012
3rd June 2011
“The announcement on Thursday 2nd June, on how the Queen plans to celebrate her Diamond Jubilee in 2012 has sparked employers to call Citation’s Personnel & Employment Law Helpline to clarify what their obligations are”, says Andrea O’Hare, Head of Personnel & Employment Law at Citation plc.
The legal position is that there is no obligation on employers to give this (or any other) bank holiday and employers have a number of options:
• Do not give the bank holiday and continue to operate the business on that day.
• Close the business on that day and give employees the additional day as a paid holiday on a one-off basis.
• Close the business on that day and give notice to employees that they will need to reserve one of their holiday days to cover this closure.
However, if you have previously given additional one-off bank holidays, e.g. the Royal Wedding in April 2011, but do not intend to give the additional holiday on this occasion, your employees might claim that taking additional one-off bank holidays is ‘custom and practice’ within the business, and that not giving the additional day would be a breach of an implied
term of their contract.
Andrea O’Hare, commented "Many businesses decided to give the Royal Wedding as an additional bank holiday to employees and many businesses may choose to do the same with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee. The legal position is that there is no obligation on employers to give this bank holiday."
