Personal Protective Equipment
Personal Protective Equipment is often known as PPE and refers to any protective clothing, helmets, goggles, glasses or other garments that are designed to protect the wearer from injury. Under no circumstances can an employer ask for money from an employee for any PPE that is required, regardless if it is returnable or not. This requirement also applies to agency workers if they are legally regarded as your employees.
PPE has serious limitations due to the fact that it does not eliminate the hazard at source and may result in employees being exposed to the hazard if the equipment fails. Therefore, PPE should always be used as a last resort and you should always try to eliminate the hazard wherever possible.

The health and safety consultant will then advise you on the best ways in which you can eliminate or control hazards. On occasions, staff will need to be trained how to use some personal protective equipment for example respiratory protective equipment (RPE). It is vital that any selected RPE is adequate and suitable for the purpose and it may be necessary to undertake face fit testing which needs to be done by a trained, competent person.
It is equally important to ensure that all equipment that is supplied is maintained and in functioning correctly as well as making sure that equipment is stored correctly when not in use.
