Statutory Sick Pay
The weekly rate of statutory sick pay is increased each year from 6 April, and qualifying employees who are absent because of personal sickness for four days or more qualify for SSP. Unless the absence ‘links’ with a previous period of sickness absence, employees have three unpaid ‘waiting days’ before they are entitled to SSP.
Employees ‘self certify’ their sickness for the first seven days of sickness, after which employers can require employees to produce a medical certificate in order to continue receiving SSP.
