Minimum wage crackdown for employers

Under new legislation, companies could face fines of up to £20,000 if they fail to pay their employees the minimum wage. The new regulations will come into force in April 2016.

Business Secretary Saijid Javid feels the new regulations show just how seriously the government are taking this issue.

“There is no excuse for employers flouting the minimum wage rules and these announcements will ensure those who do try and cheat staff out of pay will feel the full force of the law”.

Compliance officers will be used to examine the most serious cases, they will have the power to not only prosecute the employer, but to also name and shame them.

David Cameron has discussed how he will collaborate with HRMC when enforcing penalties and will make it easier for officers to convict companies.

‘‘We will significantly increase the enforcement budget, set up a new team in HMRC to take forward criminal prosecutions for those who deliberately don’t comply, and, from this autumn, ensure that anyone found guilty will be considered for disqualification from being a company director for 15 years”.
