Most employers have disciplinary rules and manage disciplinary issues by using formal
disciplinary procedures. These procedures often cover verbal warnings, written warnings
and dismissal but could also include suspension or demotion as a disciplinary penalty.
There is a statutory Code of Practice on disciplinary procedures, drawn up by Acas, and a failure to follow this statutory Code can result in any Employment Tribunal award being increased by up to 25%.
