Common questions for the cleaning industry
- What policies do I need for a cleaning business?
Most cleaning businesses need a Health & Safety policy, COSHH policy, accident reporting procedures, lone working guidance and core HR policies such as disciplinary and grievance procedures. If you employ staff, you’ll also need contracts and a staff handbook.
- Do cleaning companies need COSHH assessments?
Yes. If your team uses cleaning chemicals, you’re legally required to complete COSHH assessments. These identify risks, control measures and safe handling procedures for each substance used. You should review them whenever products or working environments change.
- Do I need to report accidents in my cleaning business?
Some incidents must be reported under RIDDOR, including certain injuries and dangerous occurrences. Even if not reportable, all accidents should be logged and reviewed to prevent repeat issues. Keeping structured accident records makes this far easier to manage.
- Do I need ISO certification for cleaning contracts?
Not always, but many commercial and public-sector tenders require or favour ISO certifications. Certification can strengthen your credibility and improve your chances of winning larger contracts.
