Ladder safety standards given a revamp

Ladder standards

The standards covering all types of portable ladder safety – otherwise known as BS EN 131 – have significantly changed.

Why? To improve the safety of all portable ladders, and make the process of purchasing the right type of ladder even easier.

What are the new requirements?

There are three core changes being implemented to improve ladder safety:

  • The width of ladders will increase to enhance stability
  • Ladders will be put through increased strength test requirements – the minimum weight bared for all ladders will be 150kg
  • There will be new requirements for ladder durability.

Who will it affect?

The change in ladder standards will affect everyone who’s involved with ladders.

When will the changes comes into effect?

Ladder manufacturers are currently in the process of replacing existing ladders with ones that meet the new standards. Once this transition period is complete, ladders conforming to the existing standards will no longer be available to buy.

Can I still use my current ladders?

Absolutely – providing they’re in good condition. Just remember that when they’re no longer fit for purpose, you’ll need to purchase ladders that meet the new BS EN 131 standards.
