The World Day for Safety and Health at Work

The UK is a founding member of the ILO and so the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is fully supportive of the ILO’s promotion of the day.

The 28th of April is also a day in which the world’s trade union movement holds its International Commemoration Day for Dead and Injured Workers to honour the memory of victims of occupational accidents and diseases and organize worldwide mobilizations and campaigns on this date.

All too often you hear people in the media saying “It’s health and safety gone mad” but events like this are designed to remind both workers and employers how vital it is to think about safety in the workplace.

The risk of workplace accidents can never be totally eliminated but Health & Safety Legislation is designed to ensure that people do as much as is reasonably possible to ensure the safety of workers and the general public.

Alastair Hall Head of Health and Safety at Citation noted “We hear of accidents, injuries and disasters on the news and you do wonder if something could have been done to prevent it. They damage livelihoods but more importantly ruin lives, so often there are ways a “Health & Safety mindset” could have minimised the risk…When someone is injured or killed at work and the Health & Safety laws have been misunderstood or the company was ignorant of the standards expected of, it only makes the tragedy worse.”

The World Day for Safety and Health at Work should serve to remind companies and their staff about their responsibility. Sometimes simply taking a step back and re-assessing working practices can highlight potential risks and allows companies to put measures in place to protect staff and keep them and others safe.

Companies like Citation offer a service that physically inspects a business and makes recommendations that save lives and prevent accidents they also ensure that companies are meeting the safety standards laid down by law. Whether you require support with things such as Health & Safety policies, or risk assessment guidance, our Health & Safety experts give you sensible and proportionate advice that really adds value to your business and this saves time and money in implementing a safer working environment.
