Caste discrimination

The government voiced its opposition to the proposed amendment, favouring an education campaign instead, but the House of Lords concluded that there was clear evidence of caste discrimination in the public sphere and passed the amendment despite the government’s opposition.

The government has now conceded and, following a consultation exercise, caste discrimination will become unlawful.
