MPs back equal pay bill

MPs were unanimous in backing a bill that would force large businesses into revealing their gender pay data. Only seven Conservatives voted against the bill, they were all male.

The average gender pay gap is currently at 19.1% according to the Office of National Statistics. The MP who brought the bill to parliament Sarah Chapman felt progress was still “too slow” and the government should be more proactive in tackling the problem.

The government has retorted by pledging £2 million to tackle disparities, and remain “absolutely committed” in reducing the gender pay gap.
