What is Blue Monday?

Today is not only Monday 18th January – it’s also known as Blue Monday; the day when resolutions are forgotten, the cold really starts to bite and everyone’s feeling just a little bit ‘meh’!

According to researchers, with Christmas and New Year long gone, coupled with dark mornings and horrible weather, it’s officially the most depressing day of the year.

There’s even a formula!

What can this mean for your business?

Low morale can have a knock on effect in your business, where you may see an increase in sickness or unexpected absences, low productivity or lower client spend.

Even if these are only one-day occurrences, they can impact for much longer.

So, how can you combat Blue Monday?

There are a number of things you can do to help minimise the effects of Blue Monday – why not buy your team some afternoon cakes? Don’t forget the fruit for those who are on a January health kick! Good food can inspire positivity, and giving that little bit back can really help engagement!

Today’s also a good time to promote your staff engagement tools. Reminding your employees of how valued they are can help you get the best out of your employees on a day like Blue Monday.  But remember – focusing on staff engagement all year round will help continuously reduce negative effects and will promote positive engagement and a healthy working environment.
